spooktober reads: the hike

To start off my reading this spooky season, I read a recommendation from my husband. All he told me was that it was really weird, but I otherwise knew NOTHING about it. I really like going into books totally blind when I have a solid recommendation for it. I listened to the audiobook for this and it took just a few minutes for me to know why my husband had recommended it to me for a Halloween read. It was gory and kind of terrifying. Okay, cool. Spirit of the season and all that…

And then we met the talking crab……

I did not expect to love it, but I loved it! It was weird and got surprisingly existential at the end… but I was horrified and also laughing aloud and also on the verge of tears throughout this one. It’s not a long book by any means, but I didn’t intend to read it in one sitting like I did. Ben was such a great picture of a parent who desperately wants to get away from his kids for just like five fuckin’ minutes until he can’t get back to them at all and then he wants nothing more than to just be able to look at their picture on his dead phone. And CRAB. He was such a fun character. Did I mention this book is weird!? If you want something to throw you for a loop and also tug your heartstrings a little, then I recommend this one.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Hike is available as an audiobook for Scribd members, which was how I listened to it. Otherwise you should check your local library or purchase it at your local bookstore!

  1. I loved this book too! 🙂 It wasn’t like anything I’d ever read before and I loved the strange, episodic structure. I have the ‘The Postmortal’ by the same author in my collection but I haven’t read it yet.
